Moving to Costa Rica is an exciting adventure, offering lush landscapes, vibrant culture, and a welcoming community. As you settle into your new life, it is imperative to find ways to give back and support the local communities that make this country so special. From animal conservation to youth education, contributing to charities that focus on Costa Rica's unique needs is a great way to make a positive impact. In this blog, we'll explore some of the top charities you should consider supporting, helping you connect with causes that truly matter and making your transition to life in Costa Rica even more meaningful.

  1. CEPIA

CEPIA (Culture, Education, and Psychology for Infants and Adolescents) is a Costa Rican nonprofit organization that focuses on improving the quality of life for children, teenagers, and their families in the Guanacaste region, particularly in underserved communities. The organization was founded in 2005 by Laetitia Deweer whom studied Educational Sciences with an emphasis on Family Education at Ghent University in Belgium and Clinical Psychology at Universidad Latina in Costa Rica. CEPIA aims to empower individuals through education, health, sports, culture, and social services. CEPIA’s most notable work comes from helping families, especially children, in need; they work with neighboring schools and associations to provide over 1000 students with Christmas presents, schools supplies, uniforms, and some even receive scholarships to advance their education. The families also receive access to legal assistance, the women’s empowerment program, professional training, and psychological support.

  1. SalveMonos

SalveMonos is a nonprofit organization based in Costa Rica, dedicated to the conservation and protection of the country’s wildlife, with a particular focus on the preservation of monkeys and their habitats. Founded in 2007, SalveMonos was created in response to the alarming decline in monkey populations, particularly in the Guanacaste and Nicoya Peninsula regions, due to habitat destruction and other human-related factors. A major part of SalveMonos’ work involves reforestation projects aimed at creating biological corridors. These corridors help connect fragmented habitats, allowing monkeys and other wildlife to move freely and safely between different areas, which is crucial for their survival. Through its rehabilitation program SalveMonos rescues injured or orphaned monkeys and other wildlife, providing them with medical care, and, whenever possible, rehabilitated animals are released back into the wild. The organization also runs awareness campaigns to prevent electrocutions, one of the leading causes of injury and death among monkeys in Costa Rica. For those moving to Costa Rica who are passionate about wildlife conservation, supporting SalveMonos offers a tangible way to contribute to the protection of some of the nation’s most iconic species.

  1. The Clean Wave

The Clean Wave (La Ola Limpia) is a nonprofit organization focused on environmental conservation, with a particular emphasis on cleaning up and protecting the country’s beaches, oceans, and coastal areas. Founded by a group of passionate surfers and environmentalists, The Clean Wave aims to address the growing problem of plastic pollution and other waste that threaten the health of marine ecosystems and the beauty of Costa Rica’s coastlines. One of the core activities of The Clean Wave is organizing regular beach cleanups along Costa Rica’s Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Volunteers from the local community, tourists, and environmental groups come together to remove plastic waste, discarded fishing gear, and other debris that accumulates on the beaches. These efforts help to prevent marine life from ingesting or becoming entangled in harmful materials. In addition to cleaning up existing pollution, The Clean Wave advocates for better waste management practices. The organization works with local governments and communities to improve recycling efforts and reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in the ocean. They also promote the use of reusable materials and alternatives to single-use plastics.

  1. The Guanacaste Water Center

The Guanacaste Water Center is a vital research and conservation initiative, focused on addressing the water management challenges faced by the Guanacaste region. This region, known for its dry tropical climate, has been increasingly affected by water scarcity due to climate change, agricultural demands, and population growth. The Guanacaste Water Center is dedicated to developing and implementing strategies for efficient water use and conservation. This includes studying the region's hydrology, understanding water availability, and promoting practices that optimize water use in agriculture, industry, and daily life. Their project “Bees for Trees” focuses on pollinator protection, particularly on the crucial role of bees in maintaining healthy ecosystems. By planting native trees and creating pollinator-friendly habitats, the organization restores degraded landscapes, supports biodiversity, and enhances the effectiveness of reforestation efforts. You can contribute to their efforts by simply purchasing their “Bees for Trees” branded honey whose entire profits are used to pay the costs of reforestation.
