Discover Costa Rica's Best Shopping Spots: From Local Markets to Luxury Boutiques

Costa Rica is known for its stunning natural beauty, but beyond the lush rainforests and pristine beaches lies a vibrant shopping scene that's just waiting to be explored. Whether you're looking for handmade local crafts, eco-friendly products, or luxury items, the country's diverse shopping destinations offer something for everyone. From bustling city markets to boutique stores tucked away in charming towns, Costa Rica has an abundance of unique finds that reflect its rich culture and artistry. In this guide, we'll take you through the best places to shop in Costa Rica, where you can discover authentic souvenirs or find your well-known favorites.

  1. Tamarindo

Tamarindo, located in the Guanacaste province, offers everything from local artisan crafts to surf shops, beachwear, and boutique fashion. The town is compact, so many of the shops are within walking distance, making it easy to explore while enjoying the beachside charm. It is home to many local artists and artisans who create unique, handcrafted items that make perfect souvenirs. You’ll find small galleries and stands offering beautiful jewelry, ceramics, paintings, and woodwork. If you’re looking for a more cosmopolitan appeal, there are several chic boutiques offering trendy beachwear and boho-chic clothing. If you are planning to stay the night we definitely recommend spending time at the Tamarindo Night Market, held every Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. This open-air market comes alive with live music, street performers, and a wide variety of stalls showcasing local artisans. Here, you can shop for handmade jewelry, art, clothing, and organic products, all while enjoying a lively, festive atmosphere.

  1. Liberia

Liberia, the capital of the Guanacaste province, is known as the "White City" and is a hub for culture and commerce in the region. It offers more traditional shopping opportunities, as well as some modern malls and local markets. Avenida 25 de Julio is the main shopping street in Liberia, where you can find a range of souvenir shops, local crafts, and clothing stores. Here you will also be able to find a popular type of retail store among the locals called “Americanas,” or stores that sell new and secondhand clothing from popular U.S. brands. If you’re looking for a more traditional route, however, Mercado Central Liberia is for you. This traditional market offers a wide variety of products, including fresh produce, handmade goods, and local delicacies;  a great spot to pick up authentic Costa Rican souvenirs.

  1. San José Central Market (Mercado Central de San José)

The San José Central Market (Mercado Central) is one of Costa Rica’s most iconic and vibrant shopping destinations, located in the heart of downtown San José. Established in 1880, it is the oldest and largest market in the capital and serves as a bustling hub of local life. The market is not only a popular place for tourists to explore but also a key part of daily life for locals, who come here to shop for everything from groceries to artisan goods. If you are there to eat we recommend the chorreadas (corn pancakes), turrón (nougat) , and cajetas (milk-based fudge candies). For those looking to take home a piece of Costa Rican culture, the market offers hand-carved wooden items, woven baskets,  pottery, leather goods, and jewelry. The San José Central Market is not just about shopping; it's an experience that immerses you in Costa Rican culture and daily life. The market is open Monday to Saturday, usually from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and can get crowded during peak hours, so visiting early in the morning or mid-afternoon is a good idea if you prefer a less hectic experience. Though a lively and sometimes chaotic environment it is always full of charm!

  1. Multiplaza Escazú

If you're looking for an upscale shopping experience, Multiplaza Escazú is the place to go. Located in the affluent district of Escazú, just a short drive from San José, it is one of the largest shopping malls in Costa Rica. This is where you will find your more well-known international luxury brands, designer stores, and high-end boutiques. Aside from international retailers, Multiplaza Escazú also features several local and regional brands like Siman, a major department store in Latin America. You'll also find a variety of popular dining options like the fast-food empires McDonalds and Taco Bell, or upscale restaurants like La Fabricca, a local Italian chain.

In summary, shopping in Costa Rica is an adventure that reflects the country’s rich culture and natural beauty. From the bustling streets of San José with its traditional markets and modern malls to the charming artisan shops in coastal towns like Tamarindo, there’s no shortage of options for both locals and tourists. Each shopping destination offers its own unique atmosphere and array of products, whether you're seeking high-end fashion, indigenous art, or fresh local produce. By exploring these diverse shopping venues, you not only find memorable treasures but also gain a deeper appreciation for Costa Rican craftsmanship and culture. So, pack your bags and get ready to experience the vibrant shopping scene that awaits you in this beautiful country!
